Rest-of-match bet
A rest-of-match bet settles only what happens from the moment of the bet until the end of the match. An already existing score does not count towards it.
At a glance
How does a rest-of-match bet work?
With a rest-of-match bet, the previous course of the match is hidden. What counts is solely what happens from the moment of your bet until the final whistle. The current score is, for this bet, mathematically set to zero to zero.
With this, you settle only the remaining playing time. An already existing lead or deficit no longer plays a role in the settlement. All that matters is what happens from your entry on. The rest-of-match bet typically exists as a live bet, i.e. while the match is in progress.
The exact starting point is decisive. Some providers settle from the minute in which you place the bet, others from a fixed time. So always check from when the rest of the match counts.
The name already says what it's about. What counts is solely the rest of the time, i.e. the part of the match still remaining. Everything before it is hidden. This makes the rest-of-match bet clearly different from an ordinary bet, where the whole match over the full distance is settled.
The guide Live betting at the betting shop covers this in detail.
Example of a rest-of-match bet
An example makes the principle clear. The match is 1-0 at the 60th minute. The table shows how the rest of the match is settled.
| Actual score when placing the bet | Score for the rest-of-match bet | What counts |
|---|---|---|
| 1-0 in the 60th minute | 0-0 | only the goals from the 60th minute |
If you tip the win of the trailing team, your bet wins if that team decides the remaining time in its favour. The goal already scored stays out of it.
The rest-of-match bet thus opens a new view of a match in progress. You don't settle the whole match, but only the section still to come. That can make sense if, in your opinion, the previous score doesn't fit the action on the pitch.
When is a rest-of-match bet interesting?
The rest-of-match bet is a form of live bet. It fits when you have the impression that the match will develop differently from now on than the previous score suggests. This lets you bet on a comeback without the early deficit counting.
- Momentum: one team is pushing for the equaliser.
- Re-assessment: the old score plays no role.
- Live: the odds adapt to the course of the match.
- Fresh view: you settle only what you currently see.
Especially with a surprising course of the match, the rest-of-match bet offers a view of its own. But it is no means of making up for a lost tip.
Rest-of-match bet and normal live bet compared
The rest-of-match bet is a special form of live bet. The difference lies in what is settled. The table compares the two.
| Feature | Normal live bet | Rest-of-match bet |
|---|---|---|
| Settled score | the whole match | only from the entry on |
| Previous score | counts in full | is set to 0-0 |
| Typical use | tip on the final score | tip on the closing phase |
You place both bet types during the match. The rest-of-match bet is especially suitable when the previous course shouldn't play a role in your assessment.
What should you look out for with a rest-of-match bet?
Live bets move fast, and the odds change often. Don't let the pace push you into rash tips. Check exactly from which minute the rest of the match is settled, because the starting point decides the result. Only stake money whose loss you can cope with. Gambling is only permitted from the age of 18 (21 in Bremen) and can be addictive.
Especially with live bets, the temptation to place tip after tip is great. Set yourself a fixed budget beforehand and stick to it. If betting becomes a burden, use the protection functions such as limits or a break.
It helps to use the rest-of-match bet deliberately and not on the side out of pure playing urge. Before the tip, briefly consider why you are betting on the rest of the match right now. A clear reason protects you better from quick gut decisions than any odds.
