Both teams to score (BTTS)

With the BTTS bet, you tip whether both teams score at least one goal in a match. Who wins the match plays no part in it.

At a glance

Principle: do both teams score or not
Options: Yes (both score) or No
Winner irrelevant: only the goals of both sides count
Popular: a simple bet with no winner tip

How does the BTTS bet work?

BTTS stands for Both Teams To Score. You tip whether each of the two teams scores at least one goal in a match. With the Yes option, both have to score. With No, your tip wins if at least one team fails to score.

If a match ends 2-1, for example, both have scored and the Yes tip wins. With a 3-0, the No tip wins, because one team did not score. Who wins the match in the end plays no part. All that counts is whether both sides manage a goal.

This makes BTTS one of the goal-related bets, and it is closely related to the over/under bet. Unlike there, though, it isn't about the total number of goals, but about the goals being shared across both teams. At the betting shop, you'll find BTTS on many football matches, often under the abbreviation GG/NG, which stands for "goal" and "no goal".

The guide Bet types at a glance covers this in detail.

Worked example: BTTS bet

Suppose you stake 10 euros on BTTS Yes at odds of 1.75. You calculate the payout with payout = stake times odds. With a winner, that gives 17.50 euros, i.e. 7.50 euros pure winnings plus your stake. The table shows how a few final scores are settled. The only thing that matters is whether each side has scored at least one goal.

Even a draw such as 1-1 meets the Yes condition, because each team has scored. If a team stays without a goal, the No tip wins instead.

What are the pros and cons of a BTTS bet?

BTTS is one of the simplest bet types, but it also has clear limits. It is quickly understood and is therefore well suited to beginners.

  • Advantage: only two options, Yes or No, easy to understand
  • Advantage: you don't have to decide on a winner
  • Advantage: often combinable with other markets such as over/under
  • Disadvantage: a late goal can tip the bet completely
  • Disadvantage: the odds on Yes are often low with attacking teams
  • Disadvantage: the course of a match is hard to predict

When does a BTTS bet suit you?

A BTTS bet can suit you when you can read the character of a match well but are unsure about the winner. When two attacking sides meet, each dangerous going forward and leaky in defence, that argues for the Yes tip. Both teams are then very likely to score.

The No tip is interesting when at least one team is very solid in defence or weak in attack. Even when a clear favourite meets a harmless underdog, a clean sheet for one side can be likely. A look at recent matches helps: how often have both teams scored lately, and how often did one side fail to score?

The BTTS bet combines well with other markets, for example with over/under on the total number of goals. At the betting shop, you'll find BTTS on many fixtures right at the terminal.

What should you look out for with a BTTS bet?

Look at how dangerous both teams are in front of goal and how stable they are in defence. A look at recent matches helps you assess whether both teams score regularly. Bear in mind that a late goal can still tip the bet. Only stake money you can spare. Play responsibly. Gambling is only permitted from the age of 18 (21 in Bremen).
