Double Chance
With the Double Chance, you cover two of the three possible match outcomes with a single tip. That increases the chance of a winner but lowers the odds.

How does the Double Chance work?
A football match has three possible outcomes: home win, draw or away win. With the Double Chance, you tip two of them at the same time. You can, for example, bet on home win or draw. Your tip then wins if one of these two results occurs.
Because you cover two of three possibilities, the probability that your tip comes in is higher. In return, the odds turn out lower than on a simple win bet. So you trade part of the possible winnings for more security. At the betting shop on site, you'll find the Double Chance on most football matches right next to the classic win bet.
The guide Bet types at a glance covers this in detail.
What variants are there with double chance?
There are exactly three combinations you can choose from. The table shows which outcome makes the tip win in each case.
| Variant | Meaning | Tip wins on |
|---|---|---|
| 1X | home win or draw | home win or draw |
| X2 | away win or draw | away win or draw |
| 12 | home win or away win | either of the two wins, no draw |
The Double Chance is well suited when you consider a team strong but don't want to rule out a draw. You use the 12 variant when you consider a draw unlikely.
Worked example: double chance
Suppose you stake 10 euros on the 1X variant (home win or draw). You calculate the payout with payout = stake times odds. The table compares the home win as a single bet with the Double Chance 1X.
| Bet | Odds | Payout if you win | Final score 1-1 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home win single | 2.00 | 20.00 euros | lost |
| Double Chance 1X | 1.30 | 13.00 euros | won |
At a final score of 1-1, the pure home-win bet loses, whereas the Double Chance 1X wins. In return, the odds are noticeably lower and the possible winnings smaller.
What is the Double Chance suited to?
The Double Chance suits matches above all whose outcome you consider open. If you back a team to win but don't want to rule out a draw, you protect yourself against a draw with 1X or X2. In doing so, you give up part of the possible odds and gain security in return.
The variant can also make sense with a strong underdog. If you believe the favourite won't lose but a draw is possible, 1X covers exactly these two cases. With two roughly equally strong teams, where you only consider a draw unlikely, the 12 variant suggests itself.
With a clear favourite, by contrast, the Double Chance adds little, because the already low odds drop even further. Then there is hardly any return left at the end. At the betting shop on site, you can compare the odds of the three variants directly with the simple win bet.
What are the pros and cons of double chance?
The Double Chance is a safer but lower-yield bet type.
- Advantage: you cover two of three outcomes and win more often
- Advantage: a draw doesn't knock your tip out of the running with 1X and X2
- Advantage: well suited to uncertain matches with a strong underdog
- Disadvantage: the odds are considerably lower than on the single bet
- Disadvantage: the possible winnings turn out correspondingly smaller
- Disadvantage: with a clear favourite, the extra cover often adds little
What should you look out for with double chance?
The lower odds mean that the possible winnings are smaller. Consider whether the extra cover makes sense for you or whether the odds are too low. Only stake money you can spare. Play responsibly. Gambling is only permitted from the age of 18 (21 in Bremen).
