At a glance
What is a licence?
A licence, often also called a concession or permit, is the official authorisation to offer sports betting in Germany. It is only granted if a provider meets strict requirements, for example on reliability, secure processing, money laundering prevention and player protection. The licence comes with permanent conditions.
If a provider doesn't comply with the conditions, the licence can be restricted or revoked.
Why is the licence important for you?
Only with a provider that holds a valid licence are your bets legally protected and the protection rules binding. These include age verification, access to the OASIS blocking system, vetted payouts and fair processes. Providers without a licence are illegal in Germany; here these safeguards are missing.
How do I recognise a valid licence?
All licensed providers are on the GGL's whitelist. Reputable betting shops also display their licence in the shop or on the website. If in doubt, a quick look at the whitelist helps before you bet.
Licence and the betting shop on site
A bricks-and-mortar betting shop arranges bets for a licensed provider. The licence lies with the provider; the betting shop accepts your bet on site. As a result, the same protection standards apply as online, from the minimum age to the option of self-exclusion. What that means specifically for you is explained in the guide GGL licence and legal sports betting.
