For sports betting, a minimum age of 18 years applies in Germany, online as well as on site at the betting shop. Bremen is the exception: there, entering and betting in a betting agency is only allowed from the age of 21 under the Bremen Gambling Act (BremGlüG). Minors may not bet and may not be given access to betting offers. The basis is the Interstate Treaty on Gambling.
How is age checked?
Providers have to check age reliably. Online, this is done at registration via an identity check, at the betting shop via an ID at the counter. In case of doubt, the staff can request proof and refuse the bet. This check protects young people from the risks of gambling.
Why is there a minimum age?
Gambling carries risks, especially for young people. The minimum age of 18 years is therefore a firm part of youth and player protection in Germany.
