Cash deposit at the betting shop: paying in cash and topping up credit
At a Tipico betting shop you pay cash in at the till or the self-service terminal. The credit is ready straight away, on your customer card, your account or directly as a stake on the slip. No nationwide law sets minimum or maximum amounts for cash deposits in person.
You pay cash in at the till or the self-service terminal. The credit lands on your customer card or account straight away, and then you place your bet. For pure cash play you often don't need ID, as long as no age check is due.

Step by step: depositing cash at the betting shop
- Have cash ready and go to the till or the self-service terminal.
- Give your customer card or account number, if you have one.
- Pay in the amount, and the betting credit is added straight away.
- Keep the receipt and place your bet.
How does the cash deposit at the till and terminal work?
You pay cash in at the Tipico betting shop at the till or the self-service terminal, and your betting credit is ready straight away. At the till, you tell staff the amount you want to pay in, and they add the credit to your account or customer card. If you don't have a customer card, ask staff about paying in without an account. In many shops you can then use cash directly as a stake on the slip, without booking it to an account first.
At the self-service terminal, you choose the deposit function, enter your account details and pay in the amount. The terminal confirms the booking on screen. For how the self-service terminal works in general, see our guide to the self-service terminal in the betting shop.
| Way | Requirement | Booking |
|---|---|---|
| Till with staff | Customer card or direct cash stake | Immediate |
| Self-service terminal | Customer card or account access | Immediate after confirmation |
Are there minimum and maximum amounts for cash deposits?
No law sets uniform minimum or maximum amounts for cash deposits in betting shops across Germany. Some shops ask for a minimum per deposit, others don't.
There is no statutory daily or monthly cap that applies to every betting shop either. The actual limits are in the terms of participation and follow from the licensing conditions. Read the terms or ask staff.
What is LUGAS and does it apply in the betting shop?
LUGAS is the central system for capping deposits across providers in online gambling. It is a requirement of the First Interstate Treaty on Gambling of 2021 (GlüStV 2021) and applies mainly to online sports betting and online gambling.
Online, a monthly deposit limit of 1,000 euros applies across all providers. Anyone betting with several online providers cannot pay in more than 1,000 euros a month in total. This limit covers the licensed online offer.
For pure cash play in the betting shop, LUGAS is not a flat hard cap. The rules for the in-person business follow the applicable licensing conditions. If you have an online and an in-person account, ask in the shop whether the two are linked and which limits then apply overall.
You can read exactly how deposit and loss limits work in our guide to loss and deposit limits in sports betting.

LUGAS is mainly an online mechanism. The high street betting shop has its own rules.
Can I also top up my betting credit by card or transfer?
Besides cash, many Tipico betting shops let you pay in without cash too. Whether card or transfer works depends on the shop. At some tills you can pay in by debit or credit card. A bank transfer to an in-person account is less common and depends on the shop.
Ask staff which payment options your betting shop offers. If you mainly want to bet without cash, a customer card is handy, because it pools your credit and makes it easier to keep track.
Every Tipico betting shop also offers the cashless payment service ZastrPay. With it, you manage your credit in an app and pay in or cash out by QR code in the shop, all without cash.
How do I keep an eye on my betting credit?
With a customer account or customer card, you can check your balance any time at the terminal, in the app or at the till. Many terminals show your balance as soon as you log in, so you see right away how much credit you have left.
Without a customer card, there's no balance to check. Your stake is the cash in front of you. If you want to keep track and set limits, a customer card is the more practical choice, because it lets you cap your deposits.

There is no nationwide statutory daily limit for cash deposits in a high street betting shop. Individual shops can set their own daily limits within the licensing conditions. Ask staff in person or read the terms of participation to find out which rules apply to you.
What happens when I have reached a monthly limit?
If you have used up the statutory online limit of 1,000 euros a month, you can't make further online deposits until the period resets. In person, the shop's own terms apply. If you're unsure, ask staff.
Is the cash deposit credited immediately?
Yes, cash deposits at the till or terminal are usually booked straight away. The betting credit is ready within seconds. If there's a delay, speak to staff or check your balance at the terminal.
Do I need a customer card to deposit cash?
Whether you need a customer card to pay in cash depends on the shop. Some betting shops only let you pay in with a customer card or account, while others also allow anonymous cash play. If you'd rather not have an account, ask staff how to place stakes without a customer card. You'll find the card's benefits in our guide to the customer card in the betting shop.
